If the point is to build understanding, then wasting the entire session on an awkward back-and-forth isn’t going to cut it. Too many 1:1’s between a Manager and their line report go like this - you’ve likely had one. Using ths template the Line Report goes through the board ideally before the 1:1 session, but going through it with the Manager will give the same outcome.

Answering each block on the board encourages a candid and honest reflection on what's working and where the Manager can best support.

It's also a great place to link to work so that there is evidence to showcase at formal review points.
